Musica Aeterna presents the season finale concert as part of the Musica Bratislavensis 24 cycle, conducted by Peter Zajíček.

Playing Vivaldi as it is performed today brings a sense of something tender—a very beautiful feeling. There is a simplicity that makes his music accessible even to those without musical training, yet it also has a depth and dynamism that satisfies even the most knowledgeable listeners. Vivaldi composed profound works at a very high level, all of which convey an incredible energy. He is the only composer who succeeded in expressing both so much joy and so much sorrow in quick succession within a single concert.

His most significant work of the time, L’Estro Armonico (Harmonic Whim), a series of concertos for string instruments known as Opus 3, was forgotten for 200 years but is still recognized as his most innovative composition. It develops a dazzling range of violin effects—sometimes bold, but always elegant. The fast movements are carried in a nervous rhythm, while the slower ones are airy, filled with unsettling melancholy, much like the city of Venice in winter. Thanks to this fascinating innovation, Op. 3 spread like wildfire throughout Europe.
