Event Description:
Simona Hulejová is a Slovak singer and songwriter who grew up in the heart of the Liptov region and has been devoted to Slovak folklore since early childhood. She has been a long-time soloist with the Folk Instruments Orchestra, performing primarily folk songs from the Liptov region. Currently, she is intensely focused on jazz. She studied jazz singing and music at the Higher Professional School of the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague and collaborates with leading jazz musicians on the Slovak, Czech, and international scenes.
She is part of the world music project Stromoradie, where she performs alongside Stanislav Palúch, Peter Korman, and Marcel Comendant. She has collaborated with artists such as Samuel Hošek, Nikolaj Nikitin, Ľuboš Šrámek, Juraj Griglák, and Matheus Jardim. She is also a member of the jazz sextet led by trumpeter Oskar Török and part of the Images of Slovakia project led by violinist Ján Kružliak Jr. She performs as a backing vocalist for Katarzia, joining her on this year’s tour, and in the Peter Lipa Symphony project.
She opened the Bratislava Jazz Days as a guest of the band Hipzz and the Spring Jazz Days with her own project, serving as the support act for the legendary American jazz bassist Victor Wooten and The Wooten Brothers.
Ľubomír Gašpar grew up deeply immersed in folklore and studied classical music at the Ján Levoslav Bella Conservatory in Banská Bystrica and the Ján Albrecht Music Academy in Banská Štiavnica under the guidance of Marcel Comendant. He has long been engaged with jazz as well. He is a recipient of the Radio Head Awards for his album The Point of View.
He approaches the cimbalom from a non-traditional perspective, exploring its full range of sounds and combining them with musical elements not typically associated with the instrument. He draws inspiration from various folk traditions and merges them with jazz and other genres. He performs with successful ensembles on cimbalom – Ľubomír Gašpar Cimbal Project, MANUŠA, Roby Lakatos Ensemble – and on double bass with the group SOLE.
