Title: Our Neighbors the Jamadovs
Venue: Kino Nostalgia, Súťažná 18, Bratislava
Organizer: Kino Nostalgia, Cinema Hall
There were six of them — father Takashi, mother Machiko, high schooler Noboru, little Nonoko, grandmother Shige, and the dog Pochi. Together, they form the Jamadov family, seemingly ordinary and typical, like thousands of others in contemporary Japan. And they truly are ordinary at first glance, but upon closer look, their everyday struggles reveal a subtle beauty that can bring a smile to your face, warm your heart, and even offer wisdom about what happiness is and how to keep it.
Director Isao Takahata is one of the most influential creators in the world of animated film. In 1985, together with Hayao Miyazaki, he co-founded Studio Ghibli and became its second creative pillar. Unlike Miyazaki, who expresses his own imagination in his films, Takahata is a director with the ambition to push animation as an art form. Under Studio Ghibli’s banner, he mainly created adaptations of foreign works that challenge traditional ideas about the intended audience for feature-length animated films, their themes, and their appearance.
