Japanese composer and musician—guitarist, turntablist, and electronic artist—Otomo Yoshihide is a prominent figure in the world of (not only) experimental music. He rose to fame in the 1990s as the leader of the group Ground Zero and has since created solo works and collaborations across various styles, from free improvisation and noise to jazz and classical music. Despite the broad scope of his work, a common characteristic is his straightforward approach to music, based on a clear plan without ambiguity or concealment.

This autumn, following Yoshihide’s solo project at A4, the seventeen-member Otomo Yoshihide Special Big Band will perform—an electro-acoustic jazz improvisation project that represents a culmination of the musician’s work and the current concert season. With its jazz approach, the ensemble is a successor to the Otomo Yoshihide New Jazz Quintet (1999-2004) and its expanded version, the Otomo Yoshihide New Jazz Orchestra.
