Title: Moyzes Quartet 50
Location: Kapitulská 313/1
Organizer: Garden of the Albrecht House, Kapitulská 1, Bratislava
A half-century of existence is not only proof of an ensemble’s artistic vitality but also an opportunity to look back on its rich history and celebrate its lasting impact on musical life, which it has helped shape for decades. In our cultural context, there are few ensembles with such a long tradition—making this jubilee celebration of the Moyzes Quartet all the more special.
The quartet was founded in 1975 during the studies of its founding members at the Conservatory in Bratislava. It adopted the name of the prominent Slovak composer Alexander Moyzes in 1981. Throughout its distinguished career, the ensemble has earned laureate titles in both domestic and international competitions and has received numerous awards, including the Tatra Banka Foundation Award for Art.
Over the years, the quartet has collaborated with major global and Slovak artists and ensembles, representing Slovak musical culture across nearly all of Europe, as well as in Japan, India, Morocco, the USA, and Cuba. It has also gained significant recognition in the recording industry, with dozens of albums and numerous recordings for Slovak Radio and foreign broadcasters.
At the Viva Musica! festival, the Moyzes Quartet will perform a program featuring works by three composers:
- Joseph Haydn, the innovator and “father” of the string quartet form,
- Ladislav Kupkovič, who had a long-standing artistic and personal connection with the quartet,
- and Alexander Moyzes, after whom the ensemble is named and who dedicated his final, fourth string quartet to them.
The concert will take place in the beautiful garden of the Albrecht House on Kapitulská Street.
“We are honored to celebrate our anniversary at the exceptional Viva Musica! festival. We will begin the concert with Haydn’s well-known ‘Bird’ Quartet, which will also be featured on our upcoming album. Ladislav Kupkovič studied violin in Bratislava—like most of us—under the renowned Slovak teacher Albín Vrteľ, who inspired the creation of our quartet fifty years ago. Lacko was our dear friend, and we’ll fondly remember him with the piece ‘Initials’. The music of Alexander Moyzes is undoubtedly a cornerstone of our repertoire. His wonderful composition, ‘Four Musicians’ – twelve pieces based on folk melodies – will surely enhance a lovely summer evening. We look forward to seeing you!”
