Event Description:

To commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Italian Cultural Institute in Bratislava, in collaboration with Kino Lumière, will present a jewel of Italian cinema: Roberto Benigni’s remarkable 1997 film Life is Beautiful (La vita è bella), which turned seven Oscar nominations into victories in three categories: Best Actor, Best Music, and Best Foreign Language Film.

The main character of Life is Beautiful is Guido, an Italian Jew who, along with his family, is deported to a Nazi concentration camp. In order to protect his son from the horrors of the Holocaust, he convinces him that they are part of an elaborate game filled with difficult challenges, and that an incredible reward awaits them at the end.

“This Oscar-winning film by Italian comedian and director Roberto Benigni is one of the most remarkable films about World War II and the Holocaust. Benigni masterfully combines drama and comedy with naturalness and ease, without the film ever feeling overly sentimental or absurd.” (Skylink)

The film will be shown in a digitized version with English and Slovak subtitles.
