The members of the SKO provide systematic performances of works by Slovak composers. Miloslav Kořínek’s lush Divertimento certainly stands up to the high standards of compositional mastery. Sir Edward Elgar wrote the Introduction and Allegro for the newly founded London Symphony Orchestra to allow the players to showcase their playing qualities. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky dedicated his evocative string sextet Souvenir de Florence to the venerable St Petersburg Chamber Music Society in gratitude for their acceptance of him as a member. One of the central themes was sketched by Tchaikovsky in Florence – hence his description of the entire work as a memoir of an inspiring trip to Italy.
