Beauty as a Straitjacket. The myth of beauty is a social construct that from an early age imposes on girls the idea of how they should be—not just visually, but mentally. It dictates their role in society, in the family, how they should behave, and what they should say. It tells them that their opinions don’t really matter and should be kept to themselves. They are expected to be a good daughter, wife, mother, lover, citizen, Christian. Young women today struggle to meet the demands of a society that constantly expects more from them—performance, perfectionism, ambition, monetization—while also remaining patriarchal. Within the beauty myth, youth is a key element. The ultimate unattainable goal, because no one can grow younger. When a woman tries to be beautiful, she must do it the “right” way. Social media has further exposed and catalyzed this pressure. The result is anxiety, depression, and a constant feeling of failure. Girls even put pressure on each other. How can one defend themselves against this? How to cope without losing self-confidence and self-worth?
