Max Reger was one of the most passionate admirers of Johann Sebastian Bach’s work. He honored Bach’s legacy primarily through his organ compositions and various arrangements of the Baroque genius’s vocal pieces.
Max Bruch was a sought-after and successful music educator. Although composing was secondary to his teaching career, he achieved significant success. Some of his works inspired future generations—his two violin concertos are considered highlights of his output.
One of opera’s greatest giants, Gioachino Rossini, withdrew from composing operas at the height of his fame in 1829. He then focused on cooking and occasionally wrote sacred and salon music. He humorously referred to these later works as his “sins of old age.”
