The work of Dežo Ursiny is an essential part of our national cultural heritage. He is one of the founders of modern Slovak rock music. His creative output goes far beyond our region. It is unique in all its forms — from early big beat phases, through musical theater compositions and film scores, to his later phenomenal period, especially his collaboration with poet Ivan Štrpka.

On October 4, 2017, a concert commemorating what would have been Dežo Ursiny’s 70th birthday was organized by his son, Jakub Ursiny. The concert program was designed to present a broad and representative overview of this extraordinary artist’s work in three parts.

The first part featured pieces arranged for string quartet, performed by the renowned classical ensemble Moyzes Quartet.

The second part showcased strong songs from the musical Peter and Lucia, with a libretto by Alta Vášová and lyrics by Ján Štrasser.

The third part offered a comprehensive overview of Dežo Ursiny’s work, from his earliest songs to those from his final period. The pieces were performed by many talented young musicians, including Dorota Nvotová, Kamil Mikulčík, Sisa Fehérová, Tomáš Sloboda, Vladislav Šarišský, Marian Slávka, Filip Hittrich, Valér Miko, Peter Bulík, Vlado Nosáľ, and Lenka Molčányiová.

Among the songs performed were Let’s Make a Summer (1965), Apple Tree in Winter (1973), Tisíc izieb (Thousand Rooms, 1986), Svitá (1981), Tvár v zrkadle (Face in the Mirror, 1990), Modrý vrch (Blue Hill, 1981), and Príbeh (Story, 1994).
