The expansive cycle of contrapuntal works The Art of Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach showcases the composer as a timeless phenomenon. In his piano works, Robert Schumann aimed to link music with poetry and imaginative imagery—Dreaming is one of his most celebrated miniatures. Dreamlike inspiration also played a role in the work of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; besides his Symphony No. 1 “Winter Daydreams”, he explored it in short piano pieces such as those from The Seasons.
Maria Theresia von Paradis was a blind pianist and composer who impressed even the genius Mozart with her playing and compositions. Beethoven’s String Quartet in F major is the last of his quartets—compared to his other late quartets, it is more transparent and light-hearted. Though renowned for his large symphonic works, Dmitri Shostakovich also made a powerful impact with his string quartets.
Jaroslav Ježek was primarily a jazz musician and improvising pianist. He composed numerous striking songs for the Liberated Theatre (Osvobozené divadlo).
